Discovering Homeschool

“You are going to do what? Are you sure that’s a good idea?”

These were the words that were echoed to us time and again when we first started telling family and friends that we planned on homeschooling our kids. You see, when we started our homeschooling journey over a decade ago, it wasn’t necessarily the popular option. Homeschool families were quickly labeled as the weird families with kids who aren’t educated by “professionals” and who are socially bankrupt. For our family, homeschooling was a brave step into the unknown.

I’ll share with you candidly that I grew up in public school and I had cast those same judgments myself a time or two before we started feeling the nudge to embark on the homeschool journey. Homeschooling was not ever on my radar before I had kids. (Interestingly, neither was having two sets of twins in less than two years, but that’s a story for another day!)

I remember as we started to discuss the idea of homeschooling, all of the questions flooded my mind. You know the ones: “How can I teach them? I’m not a trained teacher?” or “How do I know what to do?” or “How do I chose the right curriculum?” or how about this one, “What if I mess up my children?”

We are in unprecedented times, and countless families have been thrust into a position of considering homeschooling as an option they never imagined they’d find themselves considering. Maybe you are reading this because you are in that place. I imagine similar questions have passed through your mind as well.

Here’s the absolute truth: YOU are the best teacher for your kiddos! And You CAN do this!

I have been teaching my kids at home for many years. I’m not gonna lie and tell you that it’s been a cake walk. It. Is. Hard! But the rewards FAR outweigh the challenges.

I remember when I was just beginning my journey into the homeschool adventure and I knew there was so much to learn. So many things to think about and try to figure out. I had so. many. questions! So my first instinct was to reach out to other mommas that I knew had years of homeschooling experience and asked for their help. I had so much admiration for their success in this arena, and knew I could learn from them. I asked questions, took notes and I gleaned from their knowledge and years of experience. Their input and help was invaluable!

The truth is that there’s no “right” way to homeschool. In fact, there is SO MUCH freedom in being uniquely you when it comes to your homeschool journey. This has been a central guiding factor for us in all of our decisions as we’ve homeschooled our five boys. FREEDOM.

It has been my joy to help other new homeschooling mommas over the years to discover the joy in the homeschool journey. I’ve heard them ask the questions time and again, and it’s been so fun to help them discover their path, find answers the the questions and to find freedom on their homeschooling journey.

The truth is, I LOVE talking homeschool, I could talk homeschool all day long! And I LOVE helping people find solutions when they are feeling stuck. It’s this joy, in addition to some nudging from friends and family that have brought me to this place where I am able to help other mommas. I want to help YOU! I want to encourage you and cheer you on! I want to help you see that you CAN be SUCCESSFUL as you teach your children!
